Tiny Snowmen in a TreeFebruary 18, 2007

Snowmen

EXIF:     Aperture Priority, Pattern Metering, EV 0, 1/100 sec, F/8.0, ISO-100, 18 mm (28 mm equivalent)
Camera/Lens:     Canon EOS 350D Digital Rebel XT, Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Location:     Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia, PA
Notes:     This weekend Ianqui and Super G came to visit. With her (relatively) new camera and awesome zoom lens*, she has become just as infatuated with photography as I am. Photography is quite a strong bug, and I seem to know more and more people who are afflicted with it.

Anyway, so we wandered around Philadelphia this weekend with our photo gear. Just as we entered Rittenhouse Square we noticed these little snowmen lined up on the branch of this gorgeous tree. (See my black and white photoblog for a closeup of one of the snowmen that had arms.) I would post the picture I took of of our husbands but for now I will respect their anonimity; however, I'm sure you can imagine the picture with them standing on the shovelled pathway with their hands deep in their pockets coming to the realization that this was just the start of a long day of photos.

Here is one of Ianqui's pictures of the snowmen.

* As a form of torture to myself, I did a side by side comparison between her telephoto zoom (Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM) and mine (Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6) at 200mm, which pretty much confirms that you get what you pay for (I got mine for $75 used). No giant surprise there! :) (Note: I actually used the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 to take the picture shown here.)

These are really cute. I don't know if you ever saw the Hayao Miyazaki "Princess Mononoke" animated movie. It portraits some "spirits of the forests" (called Kodama in japanese) very much like these little guys. If you search for the movie on Wikipedia there is a vid cap of a Kodama at the bottom of the article).
