I really like this background and how the left flower is so sharp and how it's the only thing in focus. Posted by: Jason Dunsmore at May 22, 2006 01:48 AM
Well i think the bokeh is all right, if anything it makes the flower in the foreground pops. Good shot! Posted by: Imran at May 22, 2006 05:47 AM
I don't know, I have to say that I don't love it. Maybe if the stem were also in focus, but as it is I find it a little too artificial (as if the flower were superimposed using Photoshop). Posted by: Dr. Doodle at May 22, 2006 02:34 PM
You know Dr. Doodle, I had the same reaction! But I really didn't do anything at all in Photoshop (except to convert this from a RAW file to a JPG). The extreme sharpness of the flower contrasted with the blurred background is all the result of getting in close and using a wide aperture. This flowers are very tall (kind of leggy, if that makes any sense), so there's a decent amount of height under the flower before the part of the stem you can see, so I think that's why the part you can see is so drastically different in focus. Maybe I will reshoot these flowers from different angles and with slightly less background blur to see if I can get something that doesn't look so affected. Thanks for your feedback! nice composition! concerning the bokeh...hmm...its pretty nice, but might be even better giving it some more contrast. It almost looks alittle washed out? (maybe my monitor?). The one flower this is sharp is great! Posted by: mark at May 22, 2006 05:44 PM
Thanks Mark. I think the washed-out effect you're seeing is because you normally expect greenery to be ... greener. But this greenery is actually kind of fuzzy and grey. However, I'm sure that with different lighting conditions I can get more contrast in the background. I might also use a slightly narrower aperture, and that could also help with Dr. Doodle's reaction that the flower stands out a little bit too much. Thanks for the suggestions!
