I didn't know that there was technically good bokeh and technically bad bokeh. What is it about the bright outlines that makes bokeh bad? Is it because it is reminiscent of purple fringing? Is it that it makes them look as if they might have been pink glass baubles instead of flowers? Is it that it emphasizes the circle rather than being a round patch of color? (I also am currently fascinated by bokeh.) Posted by: jcm at May 18, 2006 10:16 PM
Hi JCM, Check out this article which describes good vs bad bokeh. As for what makes the bright outlines bad, I think it is because the out of focus areas can be distracting. I don't mind the outlines here at all. But if we're talking about blurred areas that don't involve pretty circular highlights, then bad bokeh may manifest as ghosting and doubling in the details of the background (e.g., this (scroll down), this and this).
