bokeh

Notes:     This is not the image I had in mind when I took this photo. It just a crop of the sweet, sweet bokeh in the background. It's a little dark because this was exposed to be part of the background, not the main focal point.

The strange looking flower structure in the foreground is part of the azalea bush from yesterday. The petal structure of some of the flowers were literally hanging by a thread, and the way I have cropped this, they are hanging just below the bottom of the picture. You will probably see the dying flowers in a future post. :)

Update: When I told Chiaroscuro that I had taken a picture in which I thought I had some really nice bokeh, she was surprised. "Incredible bokeh from the sigma lenses?!" Hm, so I sent her the link to this photo as soon as I posted it and she responded that the bright outlines around the bokeh circles are actually an example of bad bokeh. Ah well. I still think the pink circles are pretty. Even if they are outlined. And anyway, I don't feel too bad about it because the Sigma lens is actually hers that I am borrowing. :)

And I did try her 50/1.4 lens and was blown away by the beauty of that. I guess I am still adjusting to being able to get out of focus backgrounds by using a dSLR and so anything blurred looks pretty to me, especially when it comes out as pink circles!

I didn't know that there was technically good bokeh and technically bad bokeh. What is it about the bright outlines that makes bokeh bad? Is it because it is reminiscent of purple fringing? Is it that it makes them look as if they might have been pink glass baubles instead of flowers? Is it that it emphasizes the circle rather than being a round patch of color? (I also am currently fascinated by bokeh.)

Hi JCM, Check out this article which describes good vs bad bokeh. As for what makes the bright outlines bad, I think it is because the out of focus areas can be distracting. I don't mind the outlines here at all. But if we're talking about blurred areas that don't involve pretty circular highlights, then bad bokeh may manifest as ghosting and doubling in the details of the background (e.g., this (scroll down), this and this).
