Alcatraz Island in the late afternoon sun

Notes:     Chiaroscuro and I had been just about to buy tickets for a bay cruise, when suddenly a huge grey cloud rolled over us and it started to sprinkle. We decided to go for lunch instead and hope that the rain would pass. Later in the afternoon the rain did finally subside and surprisingly, so did the crowds. We booked ourselves on the next cruise around the bay. It was really beautiful and I highly recommend it, especially to people who live in San Francisco and yet have never played tourist in their own city!

The cruise we went on took us northeast under the Golden Gate Bridge and then looped around the back of Alcatraz Island before heading back. As you can see from the light in this photo, the late afternoon sun was getting low in the horizon as we approached The Rock.
