| Notes: | | I took this photo yesterday while out trying to shoot something to guest post over on Hotpixel. (You can see my submission here. It's the color version of this photo on my black and white photoblog.) I haven't been out shooting in a long time because I've been really busy, but I decided that Pierre's request was just the motivation I needed. And it's a good thing that he asked, because it was cold yesterday and if I hadn't needed to get a shot I think I would have gone inside much sooner than I did. I have been reading Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure, so I went outside in the late afternoon hoping to catch better light than what I tend to get in the middle of the afternoon, but since I'm in a city, all the buildings were casting shadows on each other, leaving the streets themselves pretty dark. So I had to look upward. Taking this photo called to mind a recent forum discussion on dpreview about the pros/cons of the Sony R1 vs the Canon 350D, with someone wondering whether he should return the 350D and get the R1 because it has the flip and twist LCD with live preview. This is the only thing I expect to miss when I finally upgrade to an SLR. In order to get this photo, I would have had to lie down in the street where cars were occasionally turning, and well, I probably wouldn't have lived to post this. So I do think that a dSLR will take some getting used to in this respect, learning to see photos without letting the camera screen do the funky composing for me and getting used to contorting myself however necessary to take all the same compositions I'm used to taking. I don't think I'll mind getting on my belly for nature shots, but lying on the ground in a city might be a bit more risky. :) |
