StinkoNovember 16, 2005

Update 11/17/2005: Here's an updated version of the photo, based on the feedback I got in the comments. I decided everyone was right, so I both cloned out the leaves in the top right corner and cropped a bit of the right side off (though the crop alone wouldn't have removed all the leaves). I think it's much more balanced now. What do you think? Maybe I should have taken just a bit more of the right edge off...

Location:     Baltimore, MD
Camera:     Canon PowerShot Pro1
EXIF:     1/250 sec, F/8.0, 51 mm, ISO-50
Notes:     Ginko leaves always remind me of my mother, and how I almost sent her a vile package of stinky leaves one year in college. She had asked for some of the leaves I'd told her that I'd seen on campus, so I packaged them up in a box to send to her. But then I forgot all about the box. Until one day I was walking by a ginko tree and noticed a stench that smelled... well, like crap. I realized I'd smelled it before and finally decided it was the tree that smelled. And it's true, the female trees have an awful stench. (Look it up.) I was curious whether the package would also smell, but I couldn't bring myself to open it, and I decided not to prank my mom by sending it to her. :)

By the way, do you think a crop of this photo would be better than the current composition?

Tamara, I think you're bang on suggesting a crop. I'd loose the rightmost portion of the frame, getting rid of the leaves in the corner. That said, I love the pic...the colors are great. Makes me sad I won't be seeing anything like that for several months.

I guess I'm glad you didn't give those leaves! I love the colors - simple and strong. I agree with Sean about "loosing" the right.

i would probably clone out the other leaves rather than crop, as i quite like a bit of space around the subject - adds to the feeling of fragility
