Puffer FishApril 12, 2005

Location:     Don Pedro Island, Florida
Camera:     Canon PowerShot Pro1
EXIF:     1/100 sec, F/8.0, 23mm
Notes:     It's Dead Fish Day! (O.K. Not really.)

I realize these photos (there's another one on my black and white photoblog) might be a little gross, but I was so fascinated with the structure of these fish that I couldn't resist a couple close-ups. This one is a puffer fish that we found washed up on the beach. The sun was very bright, casting strong shadows on the fish, so I tried to compensate by bringing the contrast down. I don't think it's technically a good shot, but I really like the shape of this fish. I especially love his open mouth because he looks a little like he's smiling or is about to say something.

Also... good news!! I figured out what the problem was with opening RAW files in Photoshop. I was concerned that it was related to a camera problem because I'd been able to open RAW files that came from my old PowerShot S30. But it turns out that I just needed an updated Camera Raw plug-in that would recognize my newer camera (PowerShot Pro1). Damn, I wish I'd known about this before I went to Florida, because I took most of my photos in JPG format when I discovered I couldn't open RAW files. Oh well, at least I know now!

i like this close up, looking straight in his face. The bright sun and sand combined with his open mouth make him look really thirsty to me. Quite a different atmosphere to my dead fish from yesterday.

Wow!! As soon as I opened up your blog, his face came into my eyes! And we were staring at each other for a while...
Very cool! I like it.

Wow, followed your link and first thing I come across, boom! This is just great, not gross at all! Dead fish portraits are the next big thing by the way. :)
