wow! i literally had to jump back a bit when i saw this. the dof is really cool; it accentuates the silver part of the car and makes it look like a knife coming out of the screen (that's why i jumped back). cool effect. Posted by: michael at February 8, 2005 12:31 AM
Nice shot Posted by: pierre at February 8, 2005 06:50 AM
i agree, very nice the difference between the chrome with the decaying hood. Posted by: fernando at February 8, 2005 07:04 AM
this is nice! i love car shots. new cars, old cars... all cars! the blown out part on the top-right doesnt bother me since the subject of this shot is the hood fin, and thats totally in view and focus... Posted by: frisky? at February 8, 2005 09:07 AM
It's one thing if the entire composition is "blown out" to detrimental effect but I think you can use "blown out" sections of an image as a positive compositional techinque which you've successfully done here. I do this intentionally all the time [whether or not it works in my shots is up for debate ;-) ]. When I do know that I'm doing it intentionally I try to balance the "blown out" area with an equally dark area of similar size in the same frame like I did in my post from today. Sometimes I "burn in" the edges in photoshop (I would have done the same in the darkroom) to "strengthen" the existing frame so the eye will create the absent portion of it in the "blown out" section on its own. I guess for me they key is having an area of darkness in the photo as equally balanced with the area of brightness as possible. Posted by: magnetomotive at February 8, 2005 11:52 AM
hey, this took me by surprise. kind of like when you turn your head and someone is standing right near you without you knowing it. startling..great effect. what's great is, the "in your face" part is offcenter. fantastic. beautiful color and texture with the rust, and excellent highlight on the chrome. What a striking shot! The sharp edges, the sandy texture of the hood, even the "dew drops" effect of the rust in the cromed fin. Posted by: pilgrim at February 8, 2005 02:43 PM
Sharp intake of breath when I saw this, definitely a stunner! Posted by: Carlo Ferroni at February 8, 2005 06:48 PM
Very nice texture and colors. I like the shape on the right side. It's an interesting angle shot for this front car. S. Posted by: Sakana at February 8, 2005 07:06 PM
This is a very striking shot, it just reaches right out and pulls you straight in. Posted by: Simon at February 9, 2005 12:01 AM
Great shot Tamara, the detail and focus are great. Your right about that warm rusty color on the hood warming the entire shot up. The blown out section works in favor of the shot I think... Posted by: Chris at February 9, 2005 11:59 AM
I love the depth of field and the texture of the rust on the hood, well done! Posted by: Jason at February 10, 2005 12:37 AM
That is a very cool point of view. Nice shot! Posted by: Beth at February 10, 2005 05:46 PM
Great perspective. The blow out definetly works for the image! Awesome shot. Reminds me of the space race. Posted by: emptytheater at February 10, 2005 06:37 PM
beautiful image. I have to agree with everyone on the blown out top right. It works just fine. Love the shallow DoF , the great textures and colors. Posted by: orange at February 11, 2005 08:34 AM
great angle, love old cars. Great shot! Posted by: paul at February 11, 2005 12:41 PM
Love the way you played around with the depth of focus here. Lovely... just lovely! Posted by: Jessyel Ty Gonzalez at February 11, 2005 04:20 PM
Wow this is a tremendously good shot ... like the texture of the rust, the contrast between chrome and rust, DOF, color, everything.... :) Posted by: Andy at February 11, 2005 08:01 PM
I have to delurk to say this is one of my all time favorites of Luminous Lens. Besides the earthy palette of colors, you masterfully hid the scene's single vanishing point behind the chrome fin. The out-of-focus row houses on the right really situates the image for me, and it was fortunate for the composition that the street was empty (or maybe Photoshop helped). If you do end up tweaking the image, I would add just a tiny hint of edge to the upper right side of the fin as it blends in with the sky. You should proudly make big prints of this piece! I really love this. The rusty old American dream. Your POV makes this a unique detail shot. Great stuff. Posted by: matt at February 12, 2005 10:03 PM
