Like Eastern State Penitentiary, which I thought was far outside of the city. It turns out it's just in Fairmount, and we drove by it the other day. Amazing. Also, these boathouses, I assumed would require driving to get to. I think I thought that because soon after we moved here and my parents came to visit, we walked up the path along the Schuylkill River and my dad commented that he used to row for Penn at the boathouses, but that they were farther up. Since nothing short of a 50-mile walk would deter him from walking anywhere, I assumed they must be at some great distance from where we were. But they're not! They're just a few steps beyond the Fairmount Water Works, which is just a few steps behind the Art Museum, which I regularly reach now when I go out running. Anyway, I made the discovery of the boathouses' location this weekend when I was out with the Philly photobloggers, and had the added bonus of walking around with people who knew where to go to get the best views. This is one of my favorite photos from the day.
(Yes, I see the lens flare at the top. But that gives it a slightly vintage look, don't you think? Just say yes.)

I did it this past weekend when I was testing the sharpness of my lenses and wanted a scene with some distance, but it was slightly windy and I couldn't bring myself to get out this far on the fire escape so the building next door ended up in my pictures. Tonight I thought I'd go up again now that the wind was much less and I made my way out to the end for a better shot. I think it's funny that the long exposure captured the slight breeze, and when I look at this picture, it looks terrifying to me all over again.
