WaterliliesJune 07, 2006

sepia waterlilies

Notes:     The (pink) waterlilies in the President's Garden pond are in full bloom right now, so I decided to test out my new camera and telephoto lens in combination with a new lightweight travel tripod. I only extended the tripod a few inches off the ground and discovered that lightweight means flimsy. I do think it's better than nothing, but I don't think I can set my camera up on it and walk away. Still it's better than nothing, and at about 1 pound and only 10 inches long, I'm much more likely to carry it along with me than my bigger tripod!

Since the tripod was so low to the ground, I had to lie on the ground to take this picture. A little while later, as I was having coffee with some friends, I mentioned to one of them that she might want to check out the pond because the lilies were in full bloom. A look of realization instantly crossed her face, and she asked, "was that you I just saw lying on the ground near the pond taking pictures?" It's funny, because I it had occurred to me that it might look funny but then I reasoned with myself that no one I knew would see me. Oh well, at least she would have done the same thing herself and completely understood!

The waterlillies are so gorgeous, it was worth lying on the ground to get that view ...!

I like how this image is framed, and the contrast between the white flowers and the dark leaves.Sepia toning is quite appropriate in this case.
