Morning MoonAugust 26, 2005

Location:     Chinatown, New York City
Camera:     Canon PowerShot Pro1
EXIF:     1/200 sec, F/8.0, 51.0 mm, ISO-50
Notes:     I recently found myself in Chinatown (NYC) in the early morning waiting for a bus. The moon was nearly full in the sky, even though the sun had already risen.

This scene really appealed to me because of the juxtaposition of the three buildings, and the t.v. antenna, netting, and birds silhouetted on the roof. But I couldn't decided how to process this photo. I've got two versions here and two on my color photoblog. Which do you prefer? Do you have any suggestions? (For example, in the versions where the buildings are completely silhouetted, do you think I should crop about a third off at the bottom?)

I also like the juxtaposition of the buildings in the foreground. I prefer the color version, but not because I particularly like these colors. But in the color version, there's a lot of detail that is lost in the b&w version. I think this detail makes the color version more interesting.

I like to see the buildings as in the top photo, mainly because of their contrasting color, and for the graffiti. However, I also like the moon on a darker sky. I would have created an "curves" adjustment layer in photoshop, made the photo darker as in the bottom one, and then created a gradient in the adjustment layer mask so that the darkening would apply only to the sky.
