It's hard to totally preserve image quality with any program. When you crop an image, you are taking away digital information. Unfortunately you can not add information. Your only two options are to shoot/scan at the highest resolution possible (minimum 250 for print) so you have room for reduction. If this isn't possible, then a slight blur will reduce the graininess associated with stretching the image beyond it's optimal resolution. Posted by: Tree at May 19, 2005 12:01 AM
I got lost in my Photoshop lesson and forgot to compliment you on this photo. It is beautiful and any drop in quality is not visible to my eye :) Posted by: Tree at May 19, 2005 12:03 AM
I know it would still lessen the resolution, but I think the top-third of the shot (or perhaps a bit less than that) might be cropped out. The resolution loss is apparent in the water but not that much elsewhere. Posted by: Andreas at May 19, 2005 04:33 PM
Thanks Tree, for the suggestions. Probably a slight blur would help in the sky, though I guess at the resolution it's at here for the web isn't terribly problematic. Andreas, that's a great idea about cropping out more sky. I hadn't even though of it, but I think you're right! Posted by: luminouslens at May 20, 2005 04:25 PM
The quality might not be perfect but the shot is still great! Posted by: Corey at May 21, 2005 11:33 PM
great idea, showing the sunset in black and white. I'm sure all those other people with cameras were happy with theirs in colour. Posted by: marc at May 25, 2005 01:36 PM
wow, that's unreal! Posted by: mel at June 3, 2005 06:26 PM
Oh, I had missed this one before, I am glad I browsed a little in your archive and found it. The texture of these translucent clouds in front of the sun is very beautiful. Who would have thought that one can get such a striking image of a sunset in B&W? Posted by: Massimo at August 4, 2005 11:17 PM
Love this shot, way to go taking it in b/w instead of color, not too many people would do that. Thanks for your comment on my site, I have you book-marked, I'll be back. Posted by: Nathan at January 11, 2006 12:23 PM
