White Light photoblog (color)

OrbMay 18, 2005

Location:     Lake Apopka, Florida
Camera:     Canon PowerShot Pro1
EXIF:     1/125 sec, F/4, 51 mm, ISO-50
Notes:     Yes, I've been away again. Keeping up a photoblog is hard work when I'm always going away! This time I went down to Florida to my husband's sister's wedding. The reception was held at a place overlooking a lake, and when the sun started to set, everyone with cameras rushed outside to take pictures.

This is a crop of a larger image. The quality of the crop isn't wonderful (anyone have any helpful hints about how to preserve image quality when cropping in Photoshop?), but I really liked how the closer crop made the sun so comparatively huge compared to the rest of the horizon.

It's hard to totally preserve image quality with any program. When you crop an image, you are taking away digital information. Unfortunately you can not add information. Your only two options are to shoot/scan at the highest resolution possible (minimum 250 for print) so you have room for reduction. If this isn't possible, then a slight blur will reduce the graininess associated with stretching the image beyond it's optimal resolution.

I got lost in my Photoshop lesson and forgot to compliment you on this photo. It is beautiful and any drop in quality is not visible to my eye :)

I know it would still lessen the resolution, but I think the top-third of the shot (or perhaps a bit less than that) might be cropped out. The resolution loss is apparent in the water but not that much elsewhere.
Anyway, I really like how the sun seems to be covered with cloud waves. Well done!

Thanks Tree, for the suggestions. Probably a slight blur would help in the sky, though I guess at the resolution it's at here for the web isn't terribly problematic.

Andreas, that's a great idea about cropping out more sky. I hadn't even though of it, but I think you're right!

The quality might not be perfect but the shot is still great!

great idea, showing the sunset in black and white. I'm sure all those other people with cameras were happy with theirs in colour.

wow, that's unreal!

Oh, I had missed this one before, I am glad I browsed a little in your archive and found it. The texture of these translucent clouds in front of the sun is very beautiful. Who would have thought that one can get such a striking image of a sunset in B&W?

Love this shot, way to go taking it in b/w instead of color, not too many people would do that. Thanks for your comment on my site, I have you book-marked, I'll be back.
