for the approaching end of the world, those kids seem pretty content with their finger foods. shame they're being raised by those adults. Posted by: michael at January 31, 2005 08:04 AM
Hehe, yup definitely a shame those kids will have to be raised by these *cough* moronic *cough* individuals. Oh well, it's definitely a great capture =) Posted by: Chris at January 31, 2005 10:14 PM
whats wrong with being a sports nut? sports nuts go to hell? i guess they were looking to fill the space of the sign so they added anything they could in there. Posted by: frisky? at February 1, 2005 03:47 PM
Great photograph. Sports nuts on equal with drunks and thieves? Amazing. Reminds me of a cult. I'm the first to stand up for the rights of demonstrators, but these guys give a bad name to the bible. The kids make this picture, IMHO. Would have liked to see their legs not chopped off, but maybe this is the only frame you have. Still has lots of impact. Could you share why you chose black and white? I'm wondering if the color version would emphasize the children more. Great shot. Posted by: Mark at February 2, 2005 10:33 AM
Nice shot but it's those kids I keep looking at, it's not right to feel like they're being raised 'wrongly' (if that is a parent with the sign) but you can't help but wish they were free to make up their own minds. Posted by: miles at February 4, 2005 11:34 AM
Mark - Yes, unfortunately this is the only frame I have (I only cropped a little off the right), so I can't get any more of the children. I did play with a color version as well, but somehow the color didn't seem as serious, and seriousness what what I wanted to convey. I thought about using color, but keeping it relatively desaturated, but that also never came out quite right. So in the end, what I did was use sharpening to highlight the children and the sign, hoping it wouldn't be obvious to the viewer but would be just enough for those elements to stand out as the "interesting" points. I don't know if the sharpening helped though, or if they already were the most interesting elements of the photo. But I definitely had the same reaction as many other people seem to be having, that there's an innocence about the children and you can't help but wonder and worry about them being raised by these people who are so adamant and cult-like (it would seem).
