White Light photoblog (color)

Parking GarageDecember 21, 2004

This one seems REALLY boring to me, but I was sick of posting old photos, so I tried something new today. I've taken several pictures of this parking garage over the past few years because I always think it will make a nice black & white abstract, but it never does. This time I decided to focus on the edge of the top level and try to bring out the lines of the wires. Result? I think it's still boring. Do you agree?

Location: Parking Garage, St. Paul and 34th Streets, Baltimore, MD

Camera: Canon PowerShot Pro 1

Actually, I like the shot ... the framing, etc., but the image is too flat (i.e. lacking in contrast). I assume you shot it in color? It sort of looks like a straight "mode change to grayscale." Try converting it to B&W differently. Try the Channel mixer or one of the many Photoshop plug-ins that do conversions. Here's another method: http://www.slower.net/slowerlog/2004/09/bw-conversion.php

Maybe it needs toning? I don't know. But I think you're real close to having a really nice image.

Actually, it's not a straight "mode change to grayscale". I tried everything - desaturating the image, converting to greyscale, playing around with a channel via Calculations, and using the channel mixer. Nothing helped! This was the result of using "multiply" on the red channel. Still... blah.

But I'm encouraged that you like this picture at all. I will definitely have to get back to this image and see if there's anything more I can do to it.

As for toning, I have no idea what that is. Maybe the new Photoshop book I got for Christmas will have some tips!

Maybe it was the light, and not your conversion, which made this image look flat? I like the composition too, and think it'd be worth another shot under different conditions.
